Protests by Ishraque’s Supporters Enter 5th Consecutive Day

Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain are holding demonstration, staging a sit-in outside the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters for the fifth consecutive day demanding that Engineer Ishraque Hossain be officially sworn in as mayor.

People from different areas of Dhaka started assembling in front of Nagar Bhaban from 9:30 am on Sunday (May 18). Due to the increasing pressure of the people, traffic on one side of the road in front of Nagar Bhaban came to a stop.

On May 14, several hundreds of people staged demonstration in front of Nagar Bhaban under the banner of ‘Dhakabashi’ (residents of Dhaka), demanding that Ishraque be sworn in and given the responsibilities of the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Since Thursday, non-stop programmes were announced to press home their demand.

On March 27, the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Electoral Tribunal declared Ishraque Hossain, a BNP Foreign Affairs Committee member, as the rightful mayor of DSCC. Following the verdict, the Election Commission published a gazette notification.
