World Habitat Day observed across the country
The World Habitat Day is being observed in the country today like elsewhere around the world, calling for well-planned housing for all.
The World Habitat Day is marked on the first Monday of October each year and is recognised by the United Nations as an occasion to reflect on the state of towns and cities and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.
In a message issued on Sunday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said his government is committed to ensuring safe, affordable, environment-friendly and dignified housing for all, and planned, inclusive and sustainable urbanisation.
“Ensuring safe, affordable, environmentally friendly and dignified housing for all, and planned, inclusive and sustainable urbanisation are among the key commitments of the current government,” he said.
The government and different organisations have taken various programmes to mark the day. This year, several initiatives have been undertaken under the auspices of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
A ‘Habitat Fair’ is being held today at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre to commemorate the occasion. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate the fair.
A procession was scheduled to be brought out from Zia Udyan (Crescent Lake Glass Bridge) in the capital and conclude at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre.
The World Habitat Day raises awareness about urbanisation trends, challenges, and sustainable solutions; it also highlights the collective responsibility and participation required to shape the future of cities and towns, ensuring improved living environments and a better quality of life.
The World Habitat Day 2026, under the theme ‘Adequate Housing for All’, will draw attention to the policies, partnerships and practical solutions needed to turn this right into a reality.
Achieving adequate housing requires inclusive approaches that respond to the needs of lower-income households, people experiencing homelessness, communities affected by crises and disasters, and those at risk of displacement.
It also calls for secure land tenure, well-planned and well-serviced neighbourhoods, and a wider range of housing options, including social, public, rental, cooperative, community-led and market-based models. Housing solutions should also be environmentally sustainable, climate-resilient and culturally appropriate.
The Global Observance of World Habitat Day 2026 will take place in Muscat, Oman, from 5 to 8 October 2026, marking the start of urban October and coinciding with the Home & Building Expo.
