445 detained in Ctg police drive against juvenile crime

Chattogram district police detained 445 people, including 354 juveniles, during a special drive against juvenile crime across 17 police station areas on Sunday night.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Chattogram District) Md Russell disclosed the information at a briefing this morning.

He said the special operation was conducted simultaneously in the 17 police station areas from sunset to 11pm to prevent juvenile crime and keep young people away from criminal activities.

Police teams conducted raids in different neighbourhoods, markets, railway stations, open fields, abandoned and secluded places and other spots where juveniles usually gather.

Of the 354 juveniles brought to police stations, 293 were released to their guardians after verification as no evidence of their involvement in criminal activities was found, Russell said.

They were released on signed undertakings by their guardians, he added.

Legal action was taken against 61 juveniles after preliminary evidence of their involvement in criminal activities was found, he said.

Besides, police detained another 91 people on suspicion of involvement in drug-related and other offences, bringing the total number of detainees to 445.

Guardians of the detained juveniles were called to the police stations and advised to remain vigilant about their children's activities.

"They were briefed on the importance of regularly monitoring their children's whereabouts, companions, destinations and whether they return home on time," Russell said.

He said guardians were also advised to supervise their children's education, friendships and social media use and keep them away from environments associated with drugs and crime.
