Additional 500 tonnes of urea allocated to Kurigram

The government has allocated an additional 500 tonnes of urea fertiliser for the district, beyond its regular monthly allocation, to prevent artificial shortages and keep agricultural production normal during the ongoing Aman season.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) issued a special allocation order in this regard yesterday, while the local administration has taken necessary measures to distribute the fertiliser directly among genuine farmers at the grassroots level based on their actual demand.

Deputy Commissioner Annapurna Debnath said that the additional allocation was made considering recommendations from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and the actual needs of local farmers.

She said the fertiliser would be delivered to marginal farmers as quickly as possible through BCIC and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) dealers under close supervision of the district and upazila administrations.

The deputy commissioner warned that strict legal action would be taken against any dealer or unscrupulous group attempting to stockpile fertiliser or create an artificial crisis.

According to the DAE, a total of 12,483 tonnes of urea fertiliser has been allocated to Kurigram during July, August and September this year. Of this, 4,644 tonnes were allocated for September alone, which is 750 tonnes more than the 3,894 tonnes allocated in September last year.

Kurigram DAE Deputy Director Abdullah Al Mamun said that agricultural officials are regularly advising farmers on the balanced use of fertilisers in their fields.
