DAE Sets 3.17 Lakh-Bale Jute Production Target for Narail
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target of producing 316,898 bales of jute in Narail this season as cultivation increased slightly amid favourable weather, improved yields and growing demand for eco-friendly jute products.
According to the DAE, jute has been cultivated on 23,517 hectares of land in the district this year, up from 23,498 hectares last season.
Of the total cultivated area, 6,942 hectares are in Narail Sadar, 12,165 hectares in Lohagara and 4,410 hectares in Kalia upazila. Farmers have mainly cultivated high-yielding varieties, including O-9897, GRO-524 and BJRI Tosha-8.
DAE Deputy Director Muhammad Arifur Rahman said Narail's soil is highly suitable for jute cultivation and rising domestic and international demand for eco-friendly jute products has encouraged farmers to expand cultivation.
Under the government's agricultural incentive programme, 3,200 small and marginal farmers received one kilogram of jute seed, five kilograms of DAP fertiliser and five kilograms of MOP fertiliser each free of cost this season.
