Govt Will Decide on Lawyers for Money Recovery: BB Chief

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur said that the government has the authority to appoint both domestic and foreign lawyers to recover laundered money, provided it makes the decision to proceed. He emphasised that the recovery process must follow a systematic, legally sound approach. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, June 15, 2025, the governor said, “The government can initiate legal action domestically and internationally to prevent and recover laundered money. Lawyers will determine the type of cases to file and the appropriate procedures.” Legal process for asset recovery Mansur highlighted that recovering assets requires a final court verdict. “We must first gather and present accurate information and data to the court. The judicial process will then determine the validity of our claims,” he explained.

Alternative Dispute Resolution  The governor also discussed the potential use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as an out-of-court method for recovery.  “Through ADR, lawyers from both parties can negotiate and reach an agreement. However, the decision to pursue this approach rests with the government,” he noted. Domestic and international efforts Mansur clarified that recovering domestic assets will require action in local courts, while retrieving money laundered abroad will involve foreign courts. “Bangladesh Bank is fully prepared and awaits the government’s directive to appoint lawyers,” he added.
