Man gets life sentence for heroin trafficking in Tangail
A court here today sentenced a man to life- term jail and another to five years of rigorous imprisonment for heroin trafficking. District and Sessions Judge Hafizur Rahman delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon. The court also fined life-term convict Hossain Ali, 35, Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer one year more in jail. Hossain Ali, son of Ram Khan of Kaharta village under Sakhipur upazila, was awarded life imprisonment.
The other convict, Hiru Mia alias Haider, 55, son of Badsha Mia of Ward No-6 in Sakhipur municipality, was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment. According to Tangail Public Prosecutor (PP) Shafiqul Islam Ripon, a team of the District Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested Hossain Ali and Hiru Mia near the Kalia Union Land Office in Sakhipur on January 22, 2025. Police recovered 90 grams of heroin from Hossain Ali and 10 grams from Hiru Mia during the operation.
Two other accused, Alhaj Mia and Sumi Akter of Ward No. 4 of Sakhipur municipality, fled the scene after learning about the police raid. The following day, DB Police Sub-Inspector Nuruzzaman filed a case against the accused under the Narcotics Control Act with Sakhipur Police Station. The court framed charges against the accused on October 7, 2025. A total of nine witnesses testified during the trial. Hossain Ali, who was released on bail during the case proceedings, has been absconding. Hiru Mia was present in court during the verdict and was later sent to the district jail.
