Police have arrested a 45-year-old man on charges of attempting to rape an intellectually disabled woman in Joypurhat Sadar upazila. The accused was identified as Md. Abu Asad, son of the late Hojom Uddin from Uttar Rampur village in Naogaon's Badalgachhi upazila, is currently in judicial custody. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place around 8:00 pm on June 16 at Bhagabanpur village under Varsa Union.

The 25-year-old victim was alone in her room when the accused allegedly entered the house and attempted to rape her. Hearing her cries for help, the victim's grandmother, Most. Hosne Ara, along with other family members, rushed to the scene. Local residents caught the accused and handed him over to police. Later, the victim's grandmother filed a case with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station under Section 9(4) (kha) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.

Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Md. Anowarul Islam said the accused remains in judicial custody after being denied bail. "The investigation is underway, and we have found evidence supporting the allegation of attempted rape," he said. The officer added that the victim's statement under Section 22 of the Act is expected to be recorded before a magistrate within the week as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.
