NCP Urges Heightened Border Vigilance Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has called for heightened vigilance on the border, expressing concern that the fugitive Awami League leaders and activists could create unrest by taking advantage of the war situation between India and Pakistan.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NCP also called on all “anti-fascist” political parties to unite to protect the country's sovereignty in this situation.

In response to the terrorist attack on tourists in Kashmir, India launched missile strikes on multiple targets in Pakistan late on Tuesday night.

India fired missiles into several locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, killing at least 26 people, including a child, according to Pakistani officials.

Retaliatory Pakistani shelling killed at least 10 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, Al Jazeera quoted Indian officials as saying.

The NCP statement read, "The missile attack by India on Pakistan has further aggravated the ongoing tense situation between the two countries and created a war-like situation.

"This incident is a direct blow to regional peace and stability in South Asia. The NCP calls upon the warring parties to exercise restraint and patience in the interest of peace and stability in the region."

The party fears that Awami League adherents in India could create instability in Bangladesh by taking advantage of the strained war situation.

The NCP, which comprises the frontline leaders of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement that led the protest to topple the Awami League government on Aug 5 last year, said: "Thousands of fugitive fascist Awami League supporters living in India are posing a serious threat to the overall security of Bangladesh.

"This rogue group is conspiring to create unrest and anarchy in Bangladesh by exploiting the existing troubled situation and trying to cause harm to the lives and property of the country’s citizens through infiltration and subversive activities near the border."

The party urged the interim government and the armed forces to carry out their duties with utmost professionalism by increasing surveillance and institutional capacity in the border areas.
