RMP issues helmet safety notice for motorcyclists and passengers
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) has issued a public notice directing motorcycle riders and passengers to wear helmets and comply with traffic laws in the city. The notice said motorcycle riders in the Rajshahi metropolitan area are travelling without helmets in most cases. Besides, more than one passenger is travelling with the rider in some cases. In many cases, riders wear helmets, but passengers do not.
As a result, many people are involved in serious accidents, leading to disability and even death. The notice added that according to Section 49(1)(f) of the Bangladesh Road Transport Act, 2018, both the motorcycle rider and the passenger must wear helmets, and no more than one passenger may be carried. Violation of this provision is punishable under Section 92(1) of the Act by imprisonment for up to three months, or a fine of up to Taka 10,000, or both. In addition, one demerit point will be deducted from the rider.
All motorcycle riders and passengers are especially requested to always wear helmets in compliance with the law. The RMP is active in maintaining traffic discipline and ensuring road safety. If either the rider or the passenger does not wear a helmet while travelling on a motorcycle, appropriate legal action will be taken, it added.
Additionally, drivers of all vehicles are requested to operate their vehicles in compliance with the provisions of the Road Transport Act, 2018; otherwise, legal action will be be taken. The directives were issued in a public notice signed by RMP Commissioner Mohammad Faizul Kabir on Friday.
