SC to Deliver Azhar Verdict Tuesday

The Supreme Court (SC) will deliver its verdict on Tuesday in the appeal of Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam, who is seeking acquittal from the death penalty handed down for crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
The full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, will announce the verdict.
Earlier, on May 8, the SC fixed May 27 for delivering the verdict after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defense.
The Appellate Division granted permission to file a petition against Azhar’s death sentence on February 26 this year.
On December 30, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Azharul Islam to death.
The Appellate Division later upheld the trial court's verdict on October 31, 2019, after hearing the appeal.
Azhar filed a review petition with the Appellate Division on July 19, 2020, seeking reconsideration of the apex court’s verdict.
