Suspect in Lalmonirhat teacher murder case arrested in Kishoreganj
The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested an accused individual from Kishoreganj district in connection with the hacking death of a college teacher for protesting against online gambling in Lalmonirhat's Aditmari upazila.
The arrestee is Md Hasan Ali, 20, son of Md Zainal Haque of Gandhamarua village under Aditmari police station of Lalmonirhat, a press release said here this afternoon.
Citing the case statement, the release said that Rahidul Islam, Hasan Ali, Masud Ali, and several others of Gandhamarua village under Aditmari upazila had been running online gambling and casino operations in the locality for a long time.
The victim, college teacher Ariful Islam, 35, of the same village used to urge them to refrain from gambling and worked to raise awareness in the area to stop the practice.
Enraged by this, they attacked Ariful Islam with iron rods and sharp weapons while he was returning home from college on August 1, 2026, leaving him critically injured.
He passed away while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on August 21, 2026.
Later, the victim's father filed a murder case at Aditmari police station in Lalmonirhat on August 2, 2026.
On a tip-off, a joint team comprising SRB-13 (Rangpur) and SRB-14 (Kishoreganj) conducted a raid in the Harishchandrapatti Pumdi area under Hossainpur police station of Kishoreganj and arrested Md Hasan Ali at 9:50 pm on Thursday.
The arrested individual has been handed over to Aditmari police station for further legal action.
