Two Workers Electrocuted in Nilphamari
Two workers were killed after being electrocuted while repairing an electric supply line in Kishoreganj upazila of the district. The incident occurred around 11am today in the Pakarmatha area of Payer Hat under Sadar Union of the upazila. The deceased was identified as Joyanta Ray, 26, son of Darika Chandra Ray of Kalitola area in Nilphamari Sadar upazila and Md. Mominul Islam Bachchau, 50, son of late Meher Uddin of Suthipara village in the upazila.
They were workers of a construction firm under the Rural Electricity Association (Palli Bidyut Samity). Locals said they were electrocuted when came in contact with a live-electric wire as the duo were repairing the rural electricity supply line in the area this morning. After the incident, the workers were rushed to Kishoreganj Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared them dead.
Md. Nuruzzaman, deputy general manager of the Kishoreganj Zonal Office of Nilphamari Palli Bidyut Samity, said, "A contractor firm named Sumaiya Enterprise was installing poles for a new 33 KV line in that area. The accident occurred when they started installing the poles without taking a power line shutdown."
Akhtar Hossain, a representative of the construction firm, said, "When workers were sent to the site for the power line work, the supervisor went to the electricity office for a shutdown. The agreement was to start work after the shutdown. However, the two workers, without the supervisor's permission and before the shutdown, started straightening a tilted pole and came into contact with a nearby live wire, resulting in electrocution."
Lutfor Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kishoreganj Police Station, said, "Police have been sent to the scene after receiving the news. The bodies have been recovered and legal proceedings are ongoing."
