Whip of  Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament ) Md. Akhtaruzzaman Mia, MP, today inaugurated a 60-metre girder bridge constructed over the Ichamati River in Khansama upazila of the district, opening it to public traffic.

Built at a cost of Taka 5.21 crore under the supervision of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Dinajpur, the bridge connects Planer Bazar with Hajirhat via Bottoli Bazar, improving road communication for local residents.

The bridge was officially opened around 10:30 am, while LGED Executive Engineer Md. Masudur Rahman confirmed the inauguration.

Speaking as the chief guest at the ceremony,  Akhtaruzzaman said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman does not believe in the politics of revenge and is committed to serving the country with sincerity and integrity. 

He said the government is striving to establish a positive political culture by learning from past experiences.

He said that ahead of the national election, several development projects were undertaken in greater Dinajpur with the support of the LGED Chief Engineer and LGRD and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. 

Referring to another long-delayed infrastructure project, Akhtaruzzaman said the Joyantiya Ghat bridge, which remained unfinished for 15 to 16 years, was re-tendered and construction resumed. With the completion of the Ichamati bridge, local residents can now benefit from improved connectivity. He also said the government is considering the construction of a major bridge over the Atrai River linking Joyganj in Khansama upazila with Jharbari in Birganj upazila. 

Discussions have already taken place with the Bridges Division Secretary and development partners, and he expressed hope that the project would be completed within the next five years.

The function was chaired by Khansama Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Kamruzzaman Sarkar. 

Among others present were Upazila Engineer Nurul Islam, Khansama Upazila BNP Convener Aminul Haque Chowdhury, Dinajpur District BNP Economic Affairs Secretary Rabiul Alam Tuhin, Goaldihi Union Parishad Chairman Sakhawat Hossain Liton, BNP leader Shariful Islam Pradhan, government officials, public representatives, political leaders and local dignitaries.

Later, the Whip inaugurated the renovated and refurbished hallroom at the Khansama Upazila Parishad Complex. On the occasion, sewing machines were distributed among members of small ethnic communities, while bicycles and stipends were provided to students. Sports equipment was also distributed among educational institutions, and wheelchairs were handed over to persons with disabilities.
