Youth Party Protests Demanding Ishraq Hossain Be Appointed Mayor

The Dhaka North unit of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal staged protests demanding that BNP-backed candidate Ishraq Hossain be officially appointed as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
On Wednesday (May 22), protest marches and rallies were held simultaneously at several key points across the capital. The demonstrations were led by Sajjad Miraj, a leader of the Dhaka North Jubo Dal, and attended by hundreds of leaders and activists from various wards and police precincts under the organization.
During the rally, Sajjad Miraj stated, "The people of Dhaka South have elected Ishraq Hossain as mayor through their votes. However, the government has disregarded democracy and ignored the people's verdict through an illegal administrative maneuver. We strongly condemn this and clearly state that if Ishraq Hossain is not handed the responsibilities of the mayor, the Youth Party will not leave the streets."
He further added, "By not handing over power to a public representative elected by the people, the government is undermining the democratic system of the country. Such authoritarian behavior is a threat to the nation’s future."
Other speakers included the joint convener, member secretary of the metropolitan Jubo Dal, and grassroots-level leaders. The protesters carried banners and festoons and chanted anti-government slogans.
Leaders of the organization announced that continuous programs will be held across the capital until their demands are met, and a larger movement will be called soon.
