Organized by the Satkhira Press Club, a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 29th death anniversary of Satkhira’s Dainik Patradut editor, prominent journalist and valiant freedom fighter Shaheed S M Alauddin held at the town’s Mangrove Meeting Hall on Friday at 11 am.

At the beginning of the discussion meeting, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of S M Alauddin and other deceased journalists from home and abroad. Satkhira Press Club President Abul Kashem chaired the meeting and General Secretary Asaduzzaman Asad moderated it. It was addressed by Kalyan Banerjee, Abul Kalam Azad, Kalidas Roy, Ramakrishna Chakraborty, Ali Noor Khan Babul, Sheikh Farid Ahmed Moyna, M Eiduzzaman Idris, Raghunath Khan, Barun Banerjee, Dr Mahider Rahman, M Belal Hussain and others.

The speakers at the discussion meeting said, “S M Alauddin was the first victim of journalist murder in the southwest. On June 19, 1996, he was shot dead in his newspaper office. Since then, the killers have not received exemplary punishment. Journalist S M Alauddin was a courageous editor, organizer, industrialist and social reformer. His role in establishing Bhomra Land Port, Satkhira Chamber of Commerce, Truck Workers’ Union and vocational schools will still be written in golden letters in the history of Satkhira’s development.”

The speakers at the meeting strongly condemned the torture, arrest and harassment of journalists and said, “Despite the freedom of expression in an independent country, journalists are not safe today. If justice is not ensured for the killing and torture incidents quickly, the freedom of the media will be under threat.”

Among others, Ahsanur Rahman Rajib of Ekhon TV, Shahidul Islam of Daily Janmobhumi, Asaduzzaman Sardar of Bangla Tribune, Hasan Gofur, Satkhira correspondent of The Daily Nabochatona and The Daily Tribunal, Abdur Rahman, Satkhira correspondent of The Daily Jaijaikal, Idris Ali, Satkhira correspondent of Daily Protidiner Kagoj, journalists Toufiquzzaman Litu, Abdus Salam Panna, Selim Hossain, Zakir Hossain, Masud Hasan Moni, Mehedi Hasan Shimul, Shakib Hossain, Hashem Ali and representatives of various media outlets were present.
