3 with two drivers, killed in a Head-on collision in Shahrasti
Three people, including two drivers, were killed in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a sand-laden drum truck in Shahrasti, Chandpur. At least 15 people were seriously injured in the incident. Police seized the bus and the drum truck from the scene on Tuesday afternoon. Locals are demanding a ban on sand-laden drum trucks during the day to prevent road accidents.
A passenger Al-Arafah bus and a sand-laden drum truck collided head-on while overtaking an auto-rickshaw in front of Baniachong High School in Shahrasti on the Chandpur-Cumilla highway.
The driver of the drum truck from Lalmai area of Cumilla Sadar South, Abdul Wahab, the driver of the Al Arafah bus from Gaibandha district, Kamal Hossain, and the bus supervisor from Bagerhat district, Shovan Mia, died at the scene.
Eyewitness Monir Hossain Hridoy said that the Al Arafah Express passenger bus from Dinajpur to Hajiganj and a sand-laden drum pickup from Hajiganj to Comilla collided head-on. They first went and sent the injured to the hospital. The three deceased were handed over to police and fire service officials.
Upon receiving the news, police and fire service teams went to the scene and launched a rescue operation. The injured were first taken to Shahrasti Upazila Health Complex. From there, some people were sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition. From there, a seriously injured male and female passenger were sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Meanwhile, locals demanded that sand-laden drum trucks be stopped from plying on this road during the day.
After the accident, Shahrasti police seized the bus and the truck. Traffic on the highway was closed for about 2 hours due to the accident. Police brought the situation under control. OC Mir Mahbubur Rahman said that legal action will be taken in this regard.
At least 10 people have died in sand-laden drum truck accidents in the last three months, within 10 kilometers of Uaruk Bazar on this road to Mudafarganj.
