Assistant Primary School Teachers Begin Work Abstention

Assistant teachers working at public primary schools started an ongoing full-day work stoppage programme on Monday (May 26) to press for their three-point demands, including setting their initial salary scale at grade 11.

The protesting teacher leaders have said that this program will continue until their demands are met.

Earlier, their previously declared half-day work abstention program was ended on Sunday (May 25).

Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud, president of the Bangladesh Government Primary School Assistant Teachers’ Association and coordinator of Oikya Parishad, the teachers’ alliance, said we are observing a full-day strike as our demands are not met yet.

The teachers’ three-point demand includes: implementing the recommendation of the consultation committee by redesignating the assistant teacher post as an entry-level position with pay under grade-11; removing complications in getting higher grades after 10 and 16 years of service; and ensuring 100 percent promotion to head teacher positions with quicker promotion processes.
