Bodies of two tourists have been recovered from a mountain gorge in Bagalek in Bandarban, Hill District. Police have recovered the bodies of two tourists from a mountain gorge adjacent to the Bagalek View Point on Keokradong Road in Ruma Upazila. The deceased are Md. Jamir Uddin (32), son of Zahir Uddin of Manikarhat Baro Manika area of Borhanuddin Upazila in Bhola District, and Rokaiya Akhter (30), daughter of Md. Chunnu Gazi of Posta TSO area of Lalbagh Police Station in Dhaka. Their bodies were recovered in a joint search operation by the army, police and locals on Thursday at around 11 pm. According to police and local sources, a group of 10 tourists on six motorcycles left Dhaka for Bandarban at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday and reached Ruma Upazila. The next day, Thursday, at around 2:30 pm, they arrived in the Bagalek area and stayed overnight in a cottage. Later, at around 5:30 pm, the group of tourists went to the Bagalek View Point. Although 8 members of the group returned after taking pictures there, Jamir Uddin and Rokaiya Akhter disobeyed the guide's ban and went ahead on their motorcycle past the view point.
The guide Md. Ismail, who was with them, immediately reported the matter to the Bagalek Army Camp at around 6 pm. After receiving the information, a rescue operation was launched by the army, police and locals. After a long search, the bodies of the two tourists were recovered from a mountain gorge adjacent to the view point at around 11 pm. Meanwhile, locals say that they may have lost control and fallen into the gorge due to excessive speed and lack of knowledge of the mountain path. Confirming the truth of the incident, Ruma Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manas Barua told reporters, "The bodies of two tourists have been recovered from a mountain gorge in the Bagalek View Point area. Necessary legal proceedings are underway after recovering the bodies. The real cause of the incident is being investigated, he said.
