Farmers start reaping benefits of re-excavation of the dying canal in Alfadanga

Local farmers have started reaping the benefits of the re-excavation of the dying canal in Alfadanga, Faridpur. They are now happily cultivating jute in the stagnant water of the excavated canal. Although they suffered greatly due to lack of water in the past years, this time the locals are able to easily rot jute in the sufficient water of the canal. As a result, there is a smile of satisfaction on the faces of the farmers, hoping to get the desired color of jute and a good price.On Monday  morning, such a charming scene was seen when visiting the area adjacent to the Barabay Dakshinpara Sluice Gate of the Tagarband Union of the upazila.

 Recently, a 570-meter canal was re-excavated from the Barabay Dakshinpara Sluice Gate to Milan Molya's house under the implementation of the Disaster Management Department and the overall supervision of the upazila administration. According to upazila administration sources, the estimated allocation for this project under the nationwide canal re-excavation program was 25 lakh 79 thousand 148 taka

. Although it is a small-scale project, the Alfadanga Upazila administration has completed the work by ensuring 100% proper use of government funds. In addition to ensuring the quality of the work, accurate accounting was done to maintain the transparency of the project. In this, the surplus of 37 thousand taka due to the absence of workers has been sent back to the government treasury as per the rules.

 On the spot, it can be seen that the canal, which was once filled with silt and silt, has regained its new form as a result of re-excavation. During the monsoon, water easily enters the canal from the Barashia River, so there is now a lot of water throughout the canal. And farmers are happily planting jute in groups in that water. Not only water, but also the seedlings of forest and fruit trees planted in rows on both banks of the canal have created a wonderful and pleasant environment.

Imdadul Sheikh (50), a farmer from the village of Barabay, who is busy planting jute in the canal next to his house, said that earlier, due to lack of water, we had to face a lot of trouble in planting jute. The cost of taking jute far away and rotting it would also increase. Now, with the canal being dug next to his house, that worry is gone. Thanks to the government.

Mia Asaduzzaman, Chairman of Tagaraband Union Parishad, said that due to the re-excavation of the canal, a new possibility has been created in the agricultural sector and farmers are directly benefiting from it. He welcomed such a public welfare-oriented initiative of the government.

Sagar Hossain Saikat, Upazila Project Implementation Officer, said that although the project is small in size, no laxity has been shown in its supervision and implementation. 100% of the project work has been successfully completed according to the set deadline and target.

In this regard, Alfadanga Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rifat Nur Mousumi said that the canal has been re-excavated properly as per the project instructions. It will play a very important role not only in agriculture but also in preserving the biodiversity of the area. Such work will continue in the future as per the government instructions in the public interest and for the development of agriculture.
