FF Status of Mujib and Other Leaders Not Revoked: Faruk-e-Azam

Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-e-Azam has clarified that claims about the cancellation of freedom fighter recognition for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other leaders, and their reclassification as ‘Associates of the Liberation War,’ are incorrect. The adviser made the remarks on Wednesday (June 4) while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat. The interim government issued the National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, on Tuesday night, which revised the definition of freedom fighters.
Following the ordinance, several media outlets reported that the freedom fighter status of more than four hundred politicians—including Bangabandhu, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, M. Mansur Ali, AHM Kamaruzzaman, and others who won the 1970 election—had been canceled. Faruk-e-Azam clarified that the ordinance actually affirms freedom fighter recognition for the Mujibnagar government members. The claims that the freedom fighter status of Bangabandhu and other members of the Mujibnagar government has been revoked are false.
