Muktadir calls for transforming FBCCI into effective non-political body

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir today underscored the necessity of restructuring the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) into a truly representative, effective, and non-political platform to champion the interests of the country's business community. "The FBCCI must adopt a more proactive role in protecting business interests and presenting demands to the government," he said.

The minister made these remarks while speaking at a meeting with prominent business leaders at the Ministry of Commerce conference room here, said a press release. Muktadir noted that FBCCI should exert positive and constructive pressure to secure essential policy support when necessary, serving as a legitimate advocate for the private sector.  Highlighting the need for neutrality, the minister emphasized that no opportunities should be allowed for the organization to be used for political purposes, asserting his vision for the FBCCI to function as a collective platform for all traders.

The minister described the FBCCI as a supportive force for the Ministry of Commerce, noting that the organization should provide realistic feedback and opinions to ensure informed and effective policy-making. Regarding the governance of the federation, he asserted that qualified, visionary, and energetic leadership is essential for making the organization dynamic and fruitful. He mentioned that such leadership must emerge from within the business community itself to ensure the FBCCI remains a steadfast and effective advocate for the interests of the business society.

On the issue of policy updates and procedural simplification, the minister informed the leaders that the New Import Policy is currently in its final stages and will be released to the public shortly. He also announced the formation of specialized committees involving business representatives to simplify services across the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, and the Ministry of Industries. These measures are part of the government's broader commitment to creating a more business-friendly environment, he added.

During the discussion, participating business leaders provided various suggestions to enhance the federation's effectiveness. Additional Secretary (Export) and FBCCI Administrator Md Abdur Rahim Khan also addressed the meeting alongside former presidents and current leaders of various trade bodies. BGMEA Former President S M Fazlul Huq, FBCCI Former President Mir Nasir Hossain and BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem, among others, spoke on the occasion.
