Nahida appointed Bangladesh women’s T20 captain

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as the captain of the Bangladesh women's T20 team for a one-year term. The 26-year-old replaced Nigar Sultana Joty, who recently stepped down from the role, citing the reason to focus on her batting. 

Nahida, Bangladesh's leading wicket-taker in women's T20 internationals, has established herself as one of the best spinners in the format. Since making her international debut in 2015, Nahida has played 113 T20 internationals for Bangladesh, claiming 132 wickets. 

Her tally places her fifth among bowlers from ICC Full Member countries in the format. Joty, however, congratulated her successor through a post on her official facebook page. "Heartiest congratulations to Nahida, the new captain of the T20 team. Wishing her all the best in this new role. I believe her skills and leadership will play an important part in taking the team forward," Joty wrote. 

She also expressed her belief that, despite the change in leadership, the team's passion and ambition for Bangladesh cricket would remain unchanged. "Our roles in the team may have changed, but our passion for the red-and- green flag remains the same, as does our goal of taking Bangladesh cricket to greater heights," she added.

During Joty's tenure, Bangladesh won 32 of the 82 T20 matches. The BCB has also appointed 24-year-old batter Sobhana Mostary as vice-captain of the women's T20 side. Sobhana has featured in 72 T20 internationals since making her debut in 2019. She has also joined an exclusive group of Bangladeshi batters to score more than 1,000 runs in the format, becoming only the third player from the country to reach the milestone after Nigar Sultana Joti and Fargana Hoque. Bangladesh's next T20 assignment is the ICC Women's Emerging Nations Trophy 2026 which is scheduled to take place from November 12 to 25.
