The victims held a press conference at the Magura Press Club auditorium on Sunday afternoon to protest the suing of 29 BNP leaders and activists, including teachers, doctors, businessmen, and innocent people in the case of Sohel Rana of Daribila Village in Sreepur Upazila of the district, who was injured in the anti-discrimination movement in July-August 2024.

Victims Sohag Mandal, Joynal Hossain Toton, Uttam Adhikari and Parimal Daktar said, “We do not even know the plaintiff in the case, Sohel Rana. The incident in which we have been made a defendant happened in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.”

Uttam Adhikari said, “At different times, Masud Majumdar, the former organizing secretary of the Upazila BNP, had been asking me for money for various reasons. I was implicated in this case because I did not give him the money.”

Another victim, Parimal Daktar, said, “The four of us used to run a clinic called Surgical Clinic in Sreepur. At one stage, one of the partners sold his share and left. But later he came back and claimed ownership. When I did not comply with his unreasonable demands, Masud Majumdar demanded Tk 15 lakh. I have been made a defendant in this case for not paying that money.”

The plaintiff in this case, Sohel Rana, gave a video statement to the District BNP Convener Ali Ahmed on Thursday. There, Sohel Rana said, “I did not name the accused in this case.” When his statement spread through various social media including Facebook, a storm of discussion and criticism arose. Later, the district committee expelled Masud Majumdar from the party.

Former president of Sreepur Upazila BNP Ashraful Alam Joarder and former general secretary Khandaker Abbas Uddin spoke at the press conference, among others.
