2 teenagers drown in Narayanganj

Two teenage boys drowned while taking bath in DND Lake in Siddhirganj area of the district on Monday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Monir, 15, son of Md Zakir of Mohammadpur upazila in Magura district and Shuvo, 15, son of Mizan Sikder of Patuakhali district. According to police and local sources, the two boys, both students of class VII at Godnail Bagpara Alim Madrasa, went to the lake in Burma Stand Nayapara area for taking bath after completing their madrasa examination.

As neither of them knew how to swim, they drowned in the deep water while bathing with friends, locals said. When the boys failed to return home, their family members searched for them throughout the night but could not locate them. Early Tuesday morning, locals spotted the bodies floating in the Godnail area of the lake and informed Siddhirganj Police Station. Police later recovered the bodies from the water body.

Monir lived with his family in Chowdhury Bari Bhuiyanpara of the city, while Shuvo lived in a rented house in Moonlight area under Ward No. 6. Confirming the incident, Siddhirganj Police Station Inspector (Operations) Omar Faruk said preliminary investigation suggests that the two teenagers drowned because they did not know how to swim. He added that the bodies were handed over to the families without autopsy following requests from relatives.
