46 road accident victims get Tk 1.96 crore in Khulna
A total of 46 road accident victims from Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts received cheques amounting to Tk 1.96 crore at a function held in Khulna on Thursday. Of the beneficiaries, 23 are from Khulna district, 13 from Satkhira and 10 from Bagerhat. The cheque distribution ceremony was jointly arranged by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and the Khulna District Administration at the conference room of the Khulna Deputy Commissioner.
BRTA Chairman Abu Mamtaz Sad Uddin Ahmed attended the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the function, he described road accidents as undesirable and stressed the need for strict enforcement of traffic laws alongside greater public awareness to prevent such incidents. He said nearly 70 percent of road accidents involve motorcycles and urged riders to wear helmets while driving.
The BRTA chairman also said professional drivers have been brought under mandatory training and called for coordinated initiatives to curb road crashes. Emphasising responsible driving, he urged motorists to maintain a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour. Presided over by Khulna Deputy Commissioner A S M Jamshed Khondoker, the function was addressed, among others, by BRTA Director (Audit and Law) Rubaiyat-e-Ashiq, Additional District Magistrate Nurul Hai Mohammad Anas, BRTA Khulna Director (Engineering) Md Ziaur Rahman, Motor Workers' Union President Zahid Hasan Khan, Bus-Minibus Owners' Association President Rabiul Karim and Truck Workers' Owners' Association General Secretary Sheikh Wahidul Islam. Deputy Director of BRTA Tanvir Ahmed conducted the programme.
