Films that brought together Dhallywood’s two leading ladies

Shabana and Babita are two distinct chapters in the history of Bangladeshi cinema. Both actresses were at the top of their game in their respective eras. Audiences had a special interest in watching them on screen. Yet, despite their long and illustrious careers, the two legendary actresses did not appear together in too many films.

There was a healthy sense of competition between Shabana and Babita, but never any animosity. They have praised each other on various occasions. Whenever discussions turn to the classic films of the past, the names of these two legendary actresses inevitably come up, bringing back memories of the golden era of Bangladeshi cinema. At the time, actresses were among the biggest attractions of a film. Audiences showed tremendous interest in everything from their performances and dialogues to the songs. Seeing these two brilliant stars together on the big screen was a special treat for viewers.

Shabana was renowned for the emotional depth and intensity of her performances, while Babita was celebrated for the beauty and sensitivity she brought to her acting. She was also recognised as an internationally acclaimed actress. Whenever the two appeared in the same frame, it became a memorable moment for audiences. The two legends acted together in just five films. 

The first was “Sohag”, directed by Saiful Azam Kashem. The film, which starred Razzak and Bulbul Ahmed as the male leads, was released in 1978. 

Another was “Kapurush”, directed by Alamgir Kumkum. The film featured Nayakraj Razzak and Alamgir and was also released in 1978. 

The two legendary actresses also appeared together in “Fakir Majnu Shah”, directed by Darashiko. Ujjal and Zafar Iqbal played the male leads in the film. 

Shabana and Babita also starred together in “Barud”, directed by Dewan Nazrul. The film featured Sohel Rana, Wasim, Azim, Jasim and Sujata, among others. It was released on June 1, 1979.

The fifth film featuring Shabana and Babita together was “Sonar Horin”, directed by Sirajul Islam Siraj. The film also starred Nayakraj Razzak, Bulbul Ahmed, Kabori and Suchorita. It was released in December 1979.
