Integrated efforts of government and non-government entities, along with the use of modern technologies, can strengthen the livestock sector and meet the country's rising protein demand, experts said. They made the observation while addressing a discussion titled "Role of Livestock to Face the Challenges of Protein Deficiency" in Rajshahi on Monday, organized by the Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) to mark its 10th annual general meeting at Simante Nongar Conference Hall.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sabur Ali attended the meeting as chief guest, while BLS President Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder chaired the programme. BLS General Secretary Dr Hemayatul Islam Arif, members Enamul Haque, Dr Akhtarul Islam, Dr Abdul Mannan and Selina Begum, and Deputy Director of Dairy and Cattle Development Farm Dr Ismail Haque also spoke.

Prof Jalal Uddin Sarder, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Rajshahi University, stressed the need to develop the livestock sector for food security, self-employment, and poverty reduction. He called for adopting modern technology, promoting high-yielding varieties, and providing training for farmers to overcome challenges. He said animal resources could be developed through improved economic management, research, and specialized knowledge. All concerned should contribute to developing the sector, which is vital for meeting protein requirements and socio-economic development.

Prof Sarder also suggested large-scale fodder farming to further boost livestock production. He noted that global economic recession and export bans from the Middle East are major challenges and emphasized producing internationally standard products to remain competitive. He highlighted the importance of cooperative-based modern farm management and ensuring product quality. In his speech, Sabur Ali underscored the potential of the livestock sector, saying organized initiatives are crucial for its advancement and that the Bangladesh Livestock Society has a vital role to play.
