Two killed in Dhaka-Barishal highway bus collision
Two people were killed and 20 others injured today when two passenger buses collided head-on on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Dasar upazila here in the district. The accident occurred around 11 am this morning in Melkai area under Dasar police station. According to police and local sources, a BRTC bus coming from Kuakata collided head-on with a Sohag Paribahan bus traveling from Dhaka to Barishal.
The driver of the BRTC bus (identity unknown) and a van driver on the highway were killed instantly at the scene. Among the injured, eight were admitted to the 250-bed Madaripur District Hospital in critical condition. The seriously injured include Azmina (40), Zainul (23), Tuhin (20), Russel (22), Abdul Kader (65), Robiul Islam (37), Sadeq (60), and one unidentified person.
The other injured received primary treatment. ASI Abdur Razzak, police in charge of Madaripur Sadar Hospital, confirmed the incident, saying the bodies of the two deceased have been kept in the hospital morgue and the injured are receiving treatment. Traffic on the highway was temporarily halted, causing a long traffic jam. Later, with the help of police and fire service, the two buses were removed and traffic returned to normal. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
