Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday pledged solidarity with the relatives of eight people killed in a mass shooting in British Columbia. "I know that nothing I can say will bring your children home. I know that no words from me or anyone can fill the silence in your homes tonight, and I won't pretend otherwise," Carney told an evening vigil for the victims. "We wanted you to hear that Canadians are with you, and we will always be with you," Carney said, with opposition leader Pierre Poilievre and the heads of the country's other parties at his side.

On Tuesday, an 18-year-old transgender woman opened fire at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, killing five students and a teacher, after killing her mother and stepbrother. The attacker then took her own life.
