District BNP holds preparatory meeting on Thakurgaon Airport opening

A preparatory meeting of Thakurgaon District BNP was held in view of the possible announcement of the opening of an airport in Thakurgaon. The meeting was chaired by District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin at the district office and was attended by General Secretary Poygam Ali, Joint General Secretary Shariful Islam Sharif and leaders of local BNP and its affiliates.

The leaders said that on May 20, 2026, BNP Secretary General and LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will bring a new message to the general public of Thakurgaon. At that time, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam (Rita) and State Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Milat will be with him.

A responsible source of the district BNP said that the historic announcement of the opening of Thakurgaon Airport is going to be made on this day. Thakurgaon Airport is an airport located in Shibganj of Thakurgaon district. It was used for government and military purposes. The airport is currently abandoned.

The airport was established in 1940 on 550 acres of land. The airport's runway was extensively damaged when the Indian Air Force attacked it during the Indo-Pak war in 1965. The airport was renovated in 1977, and some commercial flights operated for a few years. Due to lack of interest and declining passenger numbers, the airport ceased operations and was abandoned in 1980. The airport is currently defunct and no commercial flights operate here.
