State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku today said there is a plan to clean up DC Lake, one of Tangail town's recreational spots, and develop it into a mini tourist destination.

The State Minister said this while speaking to journalists after inaugurating a drive this morning to remove water hyacinths and accumulated waste from the lake in an effort to restore its environment.

He said DC Lake is not only a recreational facility but also an important part of Tangail town's beauty and environment.

Therefore, everyone must play a responsible role in maintaining its cleanliness and aesthetic appeal, he said adding the entire lake would be cleaned in phases.

There is also a plan to develop DC Lake as a mini tourist destination and the adjacent char area into a major tourist attraction, he said.

Necessary initiatives are being taken to achieve this goal, he said adding fish will also be cultivated in the lake, enabling local residents to benefit from it.

Once the DC Lake is made attractive and fully usable, the people of Tangail will have a modern recreational facility, he said

The State Minister said he had pledged before the election to establish a modern tourist destination in Tangail and that work is now underway.

Earlier, the State Minister inspected different parts of the lake and inaugurated the drive to remove long-accumulated water hyacinths and waste.

He later joined the cleanup effort himself and instructed the authorities concerned to continue regular maintenance and cleanliness activities.

Leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies, members of local voluntary organisations and local residents took part in the drive.

Local leaders and administrative officials were present.
