Shooter arrested in Dhulpur killing and Shani Akhra shooting: DC Wari

Police have arrested several people, including an alleged shooter, in connection with a shooting and killing in Dhulpur area of Jatrabari and a separate shooting incident at Shani Akhra in Kadamtali, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.

A number of firearms and other weapons, including foreign-made pistols, ammunition, cocktail-like devices and locally made weapons, were recovered during the operations. Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami, deputy commissioner of the DMP's Wari Division, disclosed the information at a press briefing on Tuesday (Sept. 8).

According to police, Imran Hossain, 40, was killed and Mohammad Zakaria, 33, was critically injured after unidentified assailants opened fire on them at Badal Sardar Goli in Dhulpur under Jatrabari Police Station on Sunday night.

Police conducted separate raids on Tuesday morning in Khejurbag area of South Keraniganj and Para Dogair in Demra and arrested four people in connection with the killing. A foreign-made pistol, a magazine, ammunition, three cocktail-like devices, a machete, a switchgear knife, a motorcycle and mobile phones were recovered from their possession, police said.

Earlier, another suspect, identified as Doba Mithu, had been arrested in connection with the same incident. The cocktail-like devices recovered during the operation were later defused by members of the Bomb Disposal Unit. Businessman shot at Shani Akhra. Meanwhile, police detained a man in connection with the shooting of businessman Aslam Khan at a shop in the Shani Akhra area of Kadamtali.

Local residents chased and detained the suspect before handing him over to police. Two foreign-made pistols, nine rounds of ammunition and a spent cartridge were subsequently recovered from him. Police initially identified the detained man as Monjurul Islam. DC Mallik Ahsan Uddin Sami said investigators were yet to determine why the businessman was targeted in the Shani Akhra shooting.

“The motive behind the attack and the identities of other people involved are still under investigation,” police said.
Police said operations are continuing to identify and arrest other suspects involved in both incidents.
