There have been allegations of extortion against the Laguna Paribahan, which runs from Mirpur-1 in the capital to Charabagh in Ashulia in Savar, for a long time.

Locals claim that about 120 Lagunas ply on this route every day. Along with the locals, thousands of students from various educational institutions travel on these Lagunas.

It is alleged that Monir Hossain, the brother-in-law of a BNP leader in Birulia Union, collects extortion from about 100 Lagunas every day from 'Bismillah Paribahan' and Shah Ali Paribahan.

According to locals, more than 10,000 taka is collected from this route every day. The activities are carried out by the associates of Ismail Mollah, the chairman candidate of Birulia Union Hefazat Islam, and Monir Hossain.

In addition, Monir Hossain is accused of regularly collecting extortion from about 50 vehicles of Shah Ali Paribahan that ply on the same route. Due to this, there is anger among the transport owners and drivers. They allege that the burden of extortion is ultimately creating additional pressure on the transport operation. However, it is alleged that those who refused to pay the extortion were beaten up by members of the Kishore gang and Sramik League leader Tanvir, Bipul, Babu and Shahadat led by Monir Hossain.

The victims allege that when they refused to pay the extortion, Monir Hossain and his associates stopped traffic on the road. This caused extreme suffering to the passengers and created long traffic jams.

According to the locals, as there are at least five universities in the Khagan area, a large number of students use this road every day. The frequent extortion and road blockades have created anxiety and dissatisfaction among the students. They have demanded immediate intervention of the administration in this regard and necessary action against the culprits.

It is to be noted that the statement of the accused Monir Hossain was not available regarding the allegations raised in the report. If his statement is available, it will be published.
